I despised those buses, with their emissions and squeals and oddly stained plastic seats. They would rumble down one of my hometown’s major streets, stopping just enough times for rowdy groups of middle and high schoolers who frequented the back of the bus to get too loud and catch shouted admonishments from the elders who sat at the front. I could usually be found lurking around the rowdy group, a “good kid” with a decent GPA who played along because it was better to be at the edge than to cross that thin line to outsider status. I had always loved books, though I could never find time to read them on the bus. My parents’ mantle was covered with prizes I had been awarded for my reading prowess. But those same parents, who knew that a young black man spending his time reading books with sword-bearing white people on the cover wasn’t always the most direct path to academic success, had steered my literary consumption in more practical directions. One of my classmates had been engrossed in a book that reminded me of my forbidden reading loves, only instead of white people on the cover, there were mice. His face never left its pagesto the detriment of his math studies. Seeing his enjoyment, I decided to ask him if I could borrow the book for a few days. The closer he got to the end, the more apprehensive I became. Here is where fate first intervenes: The day we found ourselves in detention together (because of missed math homework) was the very day he finished the book. I gave my ask and he told me, with the air of a child who gets everything that he wants and thus doesn’t care about anything in particular, that I could have the book because it was old anyway. That was my introduction to Brian Jacques’ Mossflower, and I went into his hero creature filled world with glee in my heart. I crossed the thin line that day. Unable to deal with the volume at the back of the bus, I moved to the front. Someone made a Rosa Parks joke, but everyone else seemed unbothered. What frightened me next was getting off at the transfer, where all of the toughest and most frightening reform school kids would hang out. Mossflower, however, was more compelling. Would Martin and Gonff escape Tsarmina’s clutches? Was Fortunata a sorceress? I kept reading because I had to know. There was a bench at the transfer, stained with the sins of high school children. I sat there, book in hand, barrelling through the eventual prison break, and followed along as a group of woodland creatures fomented a revolution. I was completely engrossed despite my teenage fears. At least, until fate decided to interrupt me once again. The girl that sat down next to me smelled like Now and Laters and hair products. Her school uniform was in a state of disarray, and her lips were plump with gloss. Two friends flanked her, equally stunning with their braids, jewelry, and candy scents. I prayed that they couldn’t hear my teeth chattering. “What you reading?” the ringleader asked, genuinely interested. She made popping noises with her gum because she could. “A book,” I replied (Stupid!), holding it up so that she could see the cover. She studied it for a moment. In the background, her friends were engaged in a discussion about which of the boys currently crossing the street was the most handsome. “That’s a weird looking book,” she said. My heart dropped to my feet, either because she had deemed my book strange or because she disapproved of me as a cluster of breathing cells. “What’s it about?” “It’s like an adventure story,” I said, somewhat surprised that I was able to form sentences. “This mouse gets locked up in a dungeon by an evil queen. The queen’s a wildcat. He and his friend break out of jail, and there’s probably going to be a big fight where they break the other folks out of the dungeon too, and save the woodlands.” “For real? My cousin is in jail. I wish somebody would break him out.” She looked at me for a moment, and I tried not to melt into a puddle of proteins. “I just came over here to see what you was reading. You looked like it was real good. If I see you after you finish your book, can I borrow it?” “You can have it,” I promised her. She smiled at me, then went to join her friends, sliding on her tough mask and punching one of the handsome boys in the arm. I never saw her again. But every so often, I think on the effect of this moment on the trajectory of my life, and consider reaching out to those who reassured me when I was most afraid of belonging. Before I do, though, I catch myself, and realize that even though the events were important, discovering a book that I loved is what mattered most. State agencies which spend CERCLA funds must account for and document all response costs to permit recovery of these costs from responsible parties by EPA and the State. It is not intended to inflict any physical pain or any torture; it is only another form of punishment. It is irrevocable because it removes those punished from society permanently, instead of temporarily imprisoning them. The usual alternative to the death penalty is life-long imprisonment. Capital punishment is a method of retributive punishment as old as civilization itself. The death penalty has been imposed throughout history for many crimes, ranging from blasphemy and treason to petty theft and murder. Many ancient societies accepted the idea that certain crimes deserved capital punishment. Ancient Roman and Mosaic law endorsed the notion of retaliation; they believed in the rule of an eye for an eye. So what are chiggers, and where do they live? Chiggers Are the Larvae of Mites Chiggers are nothing more than young mites, specifically the parasitic larvae of mites in the genus Trombicula. Mites belong to the class Arachnida, along with ticks and spiders. Like other arachnids, chigger mites go through four developmental stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Nymphs and adults have four pairs of legs, while the larvae have just three pairs. Unfortunately for us, three pairs of legs are all they need to catch us and make our lives miserable. The Chigger Life Cycle Its important to know that adult mites and nymphs dont bother people at all. They feed on small organisms (including insects) they find on decaying plant matter, as well as on insect eggs. Ecologically speaking, they can be considered beneficial organisms for their role feeding on other potential pests. Adult chigger mites spend the winter in the soil, under leaf litter, or in other protected places. Children with Disabilities in the Classroom "A recent feature of elementary schools is the more frequent inclusion of children with disabilities. Regular classrooms now include children whose physical and mental disabilities would at one time have relegated them to special classrooms" (Cooper & Ryan 1998, pp. 98). There are numerous issues that arise when it comes to educating exceptional students. Since, science is an important school subject we need to have special adaptations to meet all of the student’s needs. "Students with exceptional educational needs are best served in regular classrooms in their neighborhood schools" (Koch 1999, p. 16). While we interviewed Mark Bertram, a kindergarten teacher at Homer Elementary school, Janie Hughes, Special Education Teacher’s Aide in Mark Bertram’s classroom, we asked them the question: "What does inclusion mean to you and how does it affect your classroom?" They stated that having inclusion in the classroom from the beginning of schooling allows children to co me into contact with students unlike themselves and become comfortable with their differences. We also asked teachers, "How do the students respond to having a child with special needs in the classroom?" They stated that the children respond in a positive manner by being very caring and helpful to the students. In one of the classrooms there is a child with Cerebal Palsy. She enjoys reading books and the children are always excited to help her by holding the books, reading slowly and loudly with her. In the other classroom there is a student with Autism. When she has an episode during a lesson instead of a teacher taking out the time to calm her down, a student will rock with her until she relaxes while they are still following along with the lesson. In 1975, Public Law 94-142 was passed which means all children who have been identified as having a disability are guaranteed the right to a free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment (LRE) (Biklen, et al 1987). We saw examples of this in the classroom when exceptional students were participating in normal classroom activities with average students. For example, one of the classrooms created an ABC picture book by forming their bodies around the special needs child to create the letters of the alphabet. "Teachers will create developmentally appropriate lessons for all students which are grounded in mathematics and science and which can be applied in the design activities of technology" (NY State Education Department 2000).

Her kidnapping was hot Moroi news, and if she was recognized by any of the gate guardians, we would be stopped then and there. We were gambling that the guards would be too harried to notice her like they would Dimitri and me. That meant Dimitri took priority for disguising–requiring Adrian's help. Adrian wasn't quite as adept with illusion as Sonya was, but he understood enough of it to make Dimitri's appearance altered to the eyes of others. It was similar to how he'd used spirit during my jail escape. The question was whether or not Adrian would actually do it for us. He hadn't said a word to anyone about what he'd seen between me and Dimitri, but the others must have felt the sudden rise in tension. â€Å"We have to help Lissa,' I told him, when he didn't respond to the request. â€Å"Time's running out. Please. Please help us.' I wasn't above groveling, if that was what he needed. Fortunately, it wasn't. Adrian took a deep breath and closed his eyes for a brief moment. I wasn't sure if that was good or bad. The guardians recognized Mikhail, of course, and while still vigilant, their initial instincts didn't suspect him of nefarious deeds. He vaguely said he'd been sent to pick up some people. The guardian looking in the car scanned over Dimitri, me, and– thankfully–Jill. Adrian, a well-known figure, got us added respect. After a mandatory check of the trunk, we were sent on through. â€Å"Oh my God. It worked,' I breathed, as Mikhail drove over to the guardians' parking area. â€Å"Now what?' asked Jill. â€Å"Now we reestablish the Dragomir line and call out a murderer,' I said. â€Å"Oh, is that all?' Adrian's sarcasm was palpable. â€Å"You know,' remarked Mikhail, â€Å"that the instant your illusions are dropped, you two are going to be jumped by guardians and thrown back into jail. Or worse.' Dimitri and I exchanged looks. â€Å"We know,' I said, trying to ignore the memories of that terrible, claustrophobic experience. â€Å"But if everything works out †¦ we won't have to stay there for long. They'll use what we've found out and then eventually set us free.' I sounded more optimistic than I felt. Once parked, our party headed toward the ballroom's building, which could have been seen miles away with all the people around it. How strange. Not long ago, I'd made this same journey, with nearly the same people, hurrying away from Court. We'd worn spirit disguises then, too, and had been seeking escape. Now we were knowingly walking into peril. I was convinced if I could make it in undetected and deliver my news, everything would work out. Sonya's charm had worked perfectly when I saw the Alchemists. I had no reason to doubt it, but the fear still lurked in the back of my mind: what if it stopped functioning? What if the disguise failed and I was spotted before even getting into the building? Would they arrest me? Or would they simply shoot first? The doors were barred to spectators, but guardians were allowed access, so once again Mikhail talked us in–using a sullen Adrian as the reason. The late queen's nephew could hardly be refused, and with the chaos inside, more guardians–which Dimitri and I appeared to be–were welcome. Adrian kept an arm around Jill as they entered, and the guardians let her pass. We slipped into the ballroom, completely unnoticed. I'd seen the arguing through Lissa's eyes, but it was totally different in person. Louder. More grating. My friends and I exchanged looks. I'd braced myself for a big confrontation with the audience–hell, it wouldn't be the first time–but this was a test of even my skills. â€Å"We need someone to get the room's attention,' I said. â€Å"Someone not afraid to make a spectacle–I mean, besides me, of course.' â€Å"Mikhail? Where have you been?' We turned and saw Abe standing before us. â€Å"Well, speak of the devil,' I said. â€Å"Exactly what we need.' Abe peered at me and frowned. Charms could be seen through when others knew one was being used. Charms were also less effective if others knew the wearer well. It was how Victor had recognized me in Tarasov. Sonya's was too strong for Abe to fully break through, but he could tell something wasn't right. â€Å"What's going on?' he demanded. â€Å"The usual, old man,' I replied cheerily. â€Å"Danger, insane plans †¦ you know, the stuff that runs in our family.' He squinted his eyes again, still unable to fully see through the charm. I was probably blurry. â€Å"Rose? Is that you? Where have you been?' â€Å"We need the room's attention,' I said. I wondered if this was what it felt like when parents busted their kids for breaking curfew. He looked very disapproving. â€Å"We've got a way to settle this whole argument.' â€Å"Well,' observed Adrian dryly, â€Å"we've at least got a way to start another one.' â€Å"I trusted you at my hearing,' I told Abe. â€Å"Can't you trust me now?' Abe's expression turned wry. â€Å"You apparently didn't trust me enough to stay put in West Virginia.' â€Å"Technicalities,' I said. â€Å"Please. We need this.' â€Å"And we're short on time,' added Dimitri. Abe studied him too. â€Å"Let me guess. Belikov?' There was uncertainty in my father's voice–Adrian was doing a good job in keeping the illusion over Dimitri–but Abe was clever enough to deduce who would be with me. â€Å"Dad, we have to hurry. We've got the killer–and we've got Lissa's †¦' How did I explain it? â€Å"A chance to change Lissa's life.' Not much startled Abe, but I think my earnest use of â€Å"Dad' did. Scanning the room, his eyes landed on someone, and he gave a small jerk of his head. Several seconds later, my mother squeezed her way through to us. Great. He called; she came. They were awfully chummy lately. I hoped Lissa remained the only one with a surprise sibling. â€Å"Who are these people?' my mother asked. â€Å"Guess,' replied Abe flatly. â€Å"Who would be foolish enough to break into Court after escaping it?' My mom's eyes widened. â€Å"How–‘ â€Å"No time,' Abe said. The sharp look he got in return said she didn't like being interrupted. He headed up to where Nathan Ivashkov was leaning against his podium. He looked weary and defeated–and utterly at a loss on what to do with the mess before him. At our approach, the monarch candidates glanced over curiously, and I sensed a sudden jolt of surprise through the bond. Lissa could see right through the spirit charms. I felt her breath catch at the sight of us. Fear, shock, and relief played through her. And confusion, of course. She was so glad to see us that she forgot all about the elections and started to stand at our approach. I gave her a quick shake of my head, urging her to keep our cover, and after a moment's hesitation, she sat back down. She was worried and puzzled–but trusted me. Nathan came to life when he saw us, particularly when Abe simply shoved him out of the way and grabbed the microphone. â€Å"Hey, what are you–‘ I expected Abe to yell for everyone to shut up or something like that. Of course, Nathan had been trying that for a while with no results. So, I was quite shocked–as was everyone else–when Abe put fingers to his lips and let out the most ear-piercing whistle I had ever heard. A whistle like that through a microphone? Yeah. It hurt my ears. It had to be worse for the Moroi, and the screeching feedback in the speakers didn't help. For a moment, she froze; then I wondered if she recalled Adrian's words in the car. She stepped beside me, so pale that I worried she might pass out. I almost felt like I could too. The tension and pressure were overwhelming. No. I'd come too far. â€Å"This is Jillian Mastrano Dragomir. She's Eric Dragomir's illegitimate daughter–but she is his daughter and officially part of the bloodline.' I hated usingillegitimate, but in this case, it was a necessary fact. In the now quiet room, Daniella continued speaking. â€Å"Eric Dragomir had an illegitimate daughter, with a woman named Emily Mastrano–a dancer, if I recall correctly. He wanted it kept secret and needed certain things done– things he couldn't do himself–to help with that. I was one of the few who helped.' An uncharacteristically bitter smile turned up her lips. â€Å"And honestly, I wouldn't have minded it staying secret either.' Pieces clicked in my head. I knew now who had broken into the Alchemists' records. And why. In the room's silence, I didn't need a microphone to respond either. â€Å"Enough that you'd make certain papers disappear.' Daniella fixed that smile on me. â€Å"Yes.' â€Å"Because if the Dragomirs faded, spirit might too. And Adrian would be safe. Spirit was getting too much attention too fast, and you needed to get rid of any evidence about Jill to kill Vasilisa's credibility.' Daniella's expression confirmed as much. I should have left it at that, but my curiosity wouldn't allow it. â€Å"Then why admit it now?' Daniella shrugged. â€Å"Because you're right. One DNA test will show the truth.' There were gasps of awe from those who took her word as gospel and wondered what this meant. Others people refused to believe and wore looks of scorn. Daniella, undoubtedly disappointed the truth had leaked, nonetheless seemed resigned and willing to accept it. But her smile soon dropped as she studied me more closely. â€Å"What I'd like to know is: who in the world are you?' A good portion of the audience appeared to want to know this as well. I hesitated. Sonya's charmed disguise had gotten me pretty far at this point. We had a fragile acceptance of Jill and the Dragomir line. If we let the system run its course, and if Lissa won like I now wanted–I'd have a queenly advocate to help in the case to clear me. But staring at the crowd–full of people I'd known and respected and who had still condemned me without question–I felt anger burn within me. Spirit-induced or not, it didn't matter. I was still outraged at how easily I'd been accused and tossed away. I didn't want to wait for this to be settled in some quiet guardian office. I wanted to face them. I wanted them to know I was innocent–of killing the queen, at least. And so, surpassing my own records for dangerous, reckless behavior, I ripped off Sonya's bracelet. â€Å"I'm Rose Hathaway.'
